The sand season begins for Jannik Sinner this week with the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo. In his first match on red ashes, however, there was a defeat, and that was in doubles.

On Monday afternoon, Jannik Sinner meets Croatian Borna Coric at the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo, which is worth 5.4 million euros (click here for a detailed preview). But already on Sunday the Sextener had his first appearance in his adopted home: In doubles he competed together with his good buddy Hubert Hurkacz in the first round.

However, the duo had a difficult time, because on the other side there was an absolute top team with superstar Alexander Zverev (ATP 3) and double specialist Marcelo Melo (Brazil). In the end, Sinner and Hurkacz also had little to do and lost clearly 4: 6, 3: 6. The game was over after just 68 minutes.

Game number 9 turned out to be the sticking point in the first set, in which “Jan” and “Hubi” conceded the break to make it 4:5 and lost the section. In the second set, the South Tyrolean and the Pole gave up the serve in the third game and couldn’t get close afterwards.

Singles match on Monday

On Monday afternoon, in the third match after 11 a.m., Sinner will play his first clay court individual of the season. The Croatian Borna Coric is waiting as an opponent. The 25-year-old enjoyed great success at a young age, was already world No. 12 in 2018 and has won two titles in his career. Due to injury, however, he missed almost the entire season last year, which is why he is currently “only” 199th in the world ranking computer.
