“I’m waiting for the market to open”: Jaime Echenique on the NBA

On April 5, Jaime Echenique qualified for the postseason in the Eastern Conference wearing the Capital City Go-Go jersey, who was also present in the 131 – 122 victory against College Park Skyhawks. The Colombian has continued to show all his potential as a player in the NBA G-League, or NBA development league in the United States.

Currently, the basketball player from Barranquilla is a free agent, that is, he can be signed by any team. Given this situation, Enchique is waiting for the NBA transfer market to open.

In an interview for the newspaper As, Jaime Enchique said that he hopes to be part of a big NBA team to continue maintaining a good level and how he remembers the night he became the first Colombian to reach this league.

“People feel more excited, but I saw it coming. He had worked it day by day. For many it is a dream, for me it is my reality. They called me, I got emotional, but in the same way I had to concentrate and know that it’s my job, not letting my nerves influence my performance”, Enchique began by saying.

In the season he was with Capital City Go-Go, a G League team, he made 28 appearances, 27 minutes on average, 17.3 points per game, 10.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Regarding these good figures, he confessed that: “At the end of the season, when looking at the statistics, even I was surprised. I didn’t think he was averaging those numbers, but in the end it happened, thank God. It was a very productive year of a lot of learning, I am very grateful and excited for what is to come. The topic of the NBA was an appetizer for what is to come, I will continue working hard”.

Now, about where he hopes to be playing, Enchique explained that: “Right now I’m attending to details in Colombia, I want to spend time with my family, train. I’m going to Europe for something medical. I’m a free agent, so I’m waiting for the market to open and what the next move is.”

In addition, he spoke about the public and Colombian basketball. “Year after year things get more out of control, people recognize me on the streets. It is very gratifying to receive that human warmth in my city. In Colombia the development of the league is needed, but it is much better than yesterday. There is still a lot to improve.”
