‘I am shocked by Onana, it all seems to be going in slow motion’

Former goalkeepers Joop Hiele and Edwin Zoetebier criticize the level of the goalkeepers of the traditional top three in the Eredivisie. The duo see that too little attention is paid in the youth to training good closing posts.

“Patrick Lodewijks made a plan years ago to raise the level of keepers from the training courses. But the KNVB has not done anything with it. Or it is already in the old dirt”, Hiele opens in conversation with Algemeen Dagblad . In recent weeks, Eredivisie keepers have been under a magnifying glass: Andre Onana does not look like the goalkeeper at Ajax before his doping suspension, at PSV it is a matter of switching between Joël Drommel and Yvon Mvogo and Feyenoord goalie Ofir Marciano has not yet earned his stripes after he forced to replace Justin Bijlow below the bar.

“I was shocked by Onana,” says Zoetebier. “It seems to go in slow motion with him. The explosive and frivolous is gone.” The former goalkeeper of PSV, among others, understands that Erik ten Hag will not leave the Cameroonian. “What makes it difficult is that Stekelenburg has not kept goal for a long time and Gorter lacks experience. That makes a substitution a big gamble, I think.”

In Eindhoven, the leased Mvogo will be said goodbye after this season. Hiele would get a new closing post from outside. “It is a risk to gamble on Drommel for another year. If PSV has the opportunity to get a good keeper, I would do that.”
