Fred VanVleet about to steal a record… from Kyle Lowry!

A great moment in history will unfold this Sunday at Scotiabank Arena with the return of Kyle Lowry for the first time in the jersey of the Heat after nine seasons spent in the jersey of the Raptors. Kyle Lowry accompanied the rise of the Canadian franchise until this first NBA championship title won in 2019.

Chance of the calendar, another historical moment, of lesser scope, could take place at the same time, since Fred VanVleet could snatch the title of most prolific 3-point shooter in a season from his former teammate. In 2017-2018, the leader sealed this record with 238 3-point baskets scored. But “FVV” is already at 236. If he scores three baskets behind the arc against the Heat, he will thus take his place at the top of the hierarchy.

“It’s an incredible accomplishment”reacted the person concerned. “Obviously any time you’re in a conversation with Kyle, when you know how much he’s done for the franchise, it’s a huge honor. It’s been a hell of a year so far. To be able to get the record would mean a lot to me. I think it’s a testament to how the game is progressing and also of course my progression as a player.”

Marked by the imprint of his mentor

Continuous progress, which saw him go from 0.8 3-point attempts during his rookie year in 2016-2017 to almost 10 shots from behind the arc on average per game this season, which he owes in particular to the who was his mentor. Having become All-Star this season, “FVV” also did not fail to pay tribute to Kyle Lowry for having learned a lot from his side on this aspect.

“When I came to the league, he had over a decade in the NBA under his belt, so I was looking at all those little things that might help me, whether it was balance, downforce or just repetition. I stayed by his side to see how he fired his shot, how he went to find his shooting positions, when he did it and just how he found his rhythm., he added. “I was trying to be a sponge and learn as much as possible. But there are a million different things I could give you that I learned from him. But I think the best thing I did was start going to his workouts.”

If he is about to drop one of the many franchise records in his name, Kyle Lowry can still sleep on his two ears when it comes to the number of 3-pointers scored in his career in Toronto. In nine seasons, the leader has compiled 1,518, almost double the score of his runner-up, Morris Peterson and his 801 3-point baskets. Fred VanVleet is currently third in this ranking with 787 baskets.
