Colombian former soccer player Freddy Rinconwho played for teams like Corinthians and Real Madrid, He died this Wednesday at the age of 55 after suffering a traffic accident last Monday in the city of Cali, in the southwest of the country. This was reported by the medical chief of the Imbanaco Clinic, Laureano Quintero, who said in a statement to the press together with the former soccer player’s children that “despite all the efforts of our work team, Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia has passed away.”
A truck in which the former player of the Colombian team was traveling along with three other people crashed early Monday morning against a public service bus in Cali, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca. Rincón was admitted to the Imbanaco Clinic for a severe head trauma for which he underwent surgery that lasted two hours and 45 minutes. The former player and now sports commentator is remembered because he scored the goal with which Colombia equaled 1-1 with Germany in the 1990 World Cup in Italy, a tie with which the coffee team qualified for the first time in the round of 16 of a World Cup.
“We want to express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, relatives, followers around the planet. There will never be a way to express to them how it feels to lose one of our patients, whoever that patient is,” added the doctor. Quintero asked the fans “to honor and exalt the life of Freddy Eusebio for all the joys he gave us, for everything he made us vibrate.”
Owner of a technique that made him stand out, RIncón was part of the Colombian teams that qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, United States in 1994 and, four years later, he was in France. In addition to playing in Santa Fe and América de Cali, he also played with the Brazilians Corinthians, Santos and Cruzeiro. Wearing the Timao jersey, Rincón won the 1998 and 1999 league titles, as well as the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup at the Maracanã stadium.
