After several hours in suspense due to the state of health of Freddy Rincón, finally the outcome has been the one that nobody wanted. The former Colombian soccer player, who played for Real Madrid and Corinthians, among other teams, has died at the age of 55 after not recovering from injuries caused in a traffic accident last Monday in the Colombian city of Cali.

The death has been confirmed by the medical chief of the Imbanaco Clinic, Laureano Quintero, in a statement to the press together with the children of the former soccer player. “Despite all the efforts of our work team, Freddy Eusebio Rincón Valencia has passed away,” he said.

“We want to express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, relatives, followers from all over the planet. There will never be a way to express what it feels like to lose one of our patients, whoever that patient is, “added the doctor.

According to witnesses, the driver of the car in which the historic footballer was traveling, with three other people, would have skipped the red light and crashed into a bus. Rincón was admitted to the hospital with a severe head injury and had to be operated on and transferred to intensive care, but has not been able to recover from the serious injuries.

Three World Cups in a row

Freddy Rincón began his career in his country, with the shirt of Independiente Santa Fe to later play with América de Cali. He signed for the Brazilian Palmeiras from where he made the leap to Europe, to Napoli, prior to signing for Real Madrid in 1995 under Jorge Valdano, where he played 21 games and scored a goal. Later he returned to Brazil where he played for Palmeiras and Corinthians, where he ended his career as a player.

With the Colombia Rincón National Team, a legend in his country, he played three consecutive World Cups and wore the tricolor jersey in 84 games from his debut in 1988 until his retirement in 2001.
