Football needs more Lise Klaveness

Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, has been the only leader who has dared to face FIFA for the shameful designation of Qatar as the venue for the next World Cup. One week ago, at the FIFA convention in Doha prior to the draw, Klaveness took the floor and brought out the colors: “We cannot tolerate organizers who do not guarantee the safety of workers, or leaders who do not want to host women’s parties, nor do they protect the security of the LGBTQ community. This World Cup was awarded on unacceptable terms and with unacceptable consequences. We should think about the wounded and the relatives of the dead. ” The response from the 211 representatives of world football present there, mostly men, was one of reproach and punishment.

Qatar 2022 Secretary-General Hassan al-Thawadi told her she needed to be more polite, while Honduras Secretary-General commented: “This is not the forum to make such claims. Let’s talk about football. ” Apparently, a congress with all those who rule, dominate and decide on the planet football is not the right place to comment on the blatant lack of morale and the sausage to the human rights of the country who have decided to host and celebrate something so important as a World Cup.

Many of us who love football watch in amazement at the concession in Qatar, deaf to the first complaints published by the newspaper The Guardian about the conditions of slavery of the workers – migrants – who built the spectacular stadiums and the shocking figure of about 6,500 deaths due to lack of security. The bastard is now directly unbearable after seeing how many media outlets do not even mention the serious democratic deficits and seeing many of our childhood idols collaborate with the World Cup organization praising his virtues and great effort. . We know that those in Qatar pay, and they do it splendidly well, but the show is embarrassing.

Hopefully more Lise Klaveness in the world of football. Hopefully we can be proud that football can contribute to issues such as visibility, equality, the fight against racism and sexual diversity. But for now, there’s only one Lise Klavenees. And the others keep quiet, reproach, or charge.
