Enrique Cáceres is appointed as president of the CONMEBOL Referees Commission

  • The 47-year-old Paraguayan takes over to replace Brazilian Wilson Seneme, who has stepped down as president of the Referees Commission of the South American Football Confederation, citing strictly personal reasons.

The president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, has decided to appoint Mr. Enrique Cáceres as president of the Referees Commission of the governing body of South American football.

Cáceres had been performing in the position of Technical Manager of VAR of the South American Football Confederation. He has extensive experience in international arbitration and has the solvency and leadership essential for a position of high responsibility such as the benchmark.

The former Paraguayan referee took part in several editions of the CONMEBOL Libertadores (he directed two finals, in 2016 and 2017), the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and the CONMEBOL Copa América and was one of the South American representatives at the 2018 Russia World Cup, where he had in charge of two parties. He also directed one of the 2018 CONMEBOL Recopa finals and the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

In addition, due to his previous position, he is very familiar with the use of technological tools in the field of sports arbitration, which constitutes an additional favorable element.

Cáceres indicated that his main objective will be to develop and enhance the development of South American referees, through constant training virtually or in person.

CONMEBOL thanks Mr. Seneme for the valuable service he provided to South American football during his years as head of the Referees Commission. His work was efficient and irreproachable and we wish him success in his future endeavors.
