Bundesliga: Altach ensures pure relegation battle

In the table, the previously written-off “Ländle” club has already closed the gap on points (14) to TSV Hartberg (0-0 in Ried). The Innviertler (18) are only four points away as leaders, the second LASK (17/1:1 at Admira) also only three points. In front of them are Admira (16) and WSG Tirol (15).

“This is an absolutely trend-setting game for us. If we lose, we’re in the relegation battle. And with a draw, everything stays the same,” said WSG coach Thomas Silberberger in the run-up to the game. It has become the former, and the WSG is actually more than ever in the fight for relegation – but the other teams are now looking backwards.

Altach wins Westderby against WSG

Altach scored important points in the relegation battle against WSG Tirol. With a clear 3-0 victory, the Vorarlbergers close the gap to Hartberg.

Altach successful after corners

The Tyrolean hosts started the game better and had the first chance to score after five minutes with a long-range shot by Tim Prica. It took Altach about a quarter of an hour before Bischof appeared in the penalty area for the first time. The following corner kick led to the 1:0 for the guests (17th). After Nimaga’s header, Zan Rogelj only clarified his rescue attempt behind the goal line.

Unbeaten four games in a row: Altach makes for an exciting starting position in the qualifying group

Altach led against the course of the game and unsettled the Watteners. For their part, the guests were more compact than at the beginning and did not allow the WSG to find any more chances to score until half-time. Altach showed himself to be more and more secure with the ball. 37 minutes: second corner for Altach, second goal. After Dominik Stumberger’s header was saved for a short time, the ball reached Schreiner, and his shot was deflected by Stumberger into an untenable path for goalkeeper Ferdinand Oswald. Altach was efficient and led 2-0.

Tirol misses a goal

After the break, substitute Watten top scorer Giacomo Vrioni checked Altach’s goalie Tino Casali (50′). Coach Silberberger obviously read his men the riot act at half-time. But Altach was close to the preliminary decision from another standard situation. However, Gianluca Gaudino’s free kick landed on the crossbar (59′). Less than 60 seconds later, Prica hit the bar with a long-range shot. Suddenly there was some fire in the game.

When he hit the supposed decision, Bischof was initially offside. However, the 19-year-old should still be able to make it 3-0. After nice preliminary work by Christoph Monschein, the striker prevailed against Rogelj and Behounek, who acted much too timidly, and converted to the final score. Three minutes later he even missed the 4:0 by a hair’s breadth.

Comments on the game:

Thomas Silberberger (WSG trainer): “We got into the game really well, but after Altach’s first action, the game tipped over. We warned against set pieces. The 1-0 was catastrophically defended, the 2-0 can happen. Then you are on the losing road. In many situations we weren’t compelling, unfortunately not good enough today. The qualifying group is a brutal challenge this year. We have to keep calm, but I’ll do that anyway.”

Ludovic Magnin (Altach coach): “If you get a run, you also get the self-confidence with corner kicks that this is now a chance to score. We were sometimes the better team before that, but we didn’t score the points. It is not a matter of course to get eight points now. We no longer break down when something goes against us. It wasn’t perfect today either. But the players also work very well tactically as a team, and that little bit of luck is on our side now. It is important not to fall into euphoria. Against LASK we are clear outsiders again.”
