According to the former tennis star Boris Becker, he does not know where several important trophies are located. He has no idea, said Becker on Monday as a defendant in London’s Southwark Crown Court. Even his former manager Ion Tiriac, who had held some trophies for a long time, did not know this.

The prosecution disputed the information. It is hard to imagine that some of the most important trophies from Becker’s career simply disappeared, said prosecutor Rebecca Chalkley. Rather, he wanted to withhold the awards. “That’s not correct,” said the ex-athlete.

Seven years imprisonment

Chalkley accuses Becker of deliberately withdrawing the trophies – as well as several accounts and real estate – from the access of his insolvency administrator Mark Ford. The 54-year-old could theoretically face up to seven years in prison. Becker filed for personal bankruptcy in 2017.

On an earlier day of the trial, the ex-tennis star had emphasized that he only had replica versions in his possession, and that the originals were only given to him for the winner’s ceremony. At the time, he didn’t attach much importance to the awards, the titles were more important to him. In any case, he usually quickly traveled on to another tournament. Becker said on Monday that there were many trophies in his mother’s house. “Hopefully all the trophies you’re looking for are there,” he said. (mss/dpa)
