Fernando Alonso seemed to surprise in qualifying yesterday. The Spaniard was on a lap that might have given him pole position. However, the Spaniard crashed due to a hydraulic problem and had to start from tenth place. He started strong but his strategy threw a spanner in the works.
Alonso started the race on the hard tire and it soon became clear that he would be riding on this compound for a very long time. During the safety car periods, however, Alonso did not duck in to take advantage of the situation. Because he stayed on the track, at one point he was even in fourth place. When he finally dove in, it was already too late and he finished seventeenth and last.
Speechless
Afterwards, the experienced two-time world champion was deeply disappointed. The Spanish Alpine driver made that clear to Motorsport.com: “I’m really speechless now. It’s hard to accept that everything is going wrong now but we still have 20 races to go. Sooner or later luck will come our way We really have to get this happiness at certain times.”
It is the second race in a row that Alonso had the points up for grabs but had to settle for a nil score. The Spanish superstar remains disappointed: “The reality is that we lost sixth place in Saudi Arabia and that also happened here due to the safety car. Due to Verstappen’s failure, we would have managed to reach the podium today, especially if you “Look at our pace from yesterday. We could have beaten Russell for the podium. I think we were faster than Mercedes so we really missed an opportunity.”
