The Swedish Basketball Association has warned former players from Detroit, Boston, Utah and Golden State not to sign a contract with the CSKA Moscow team. Nevertheless, Jerebko signed the contract. Shortly afterwards, he was indefinitely expelled from the national team and lost his sponsor.
The expulsion from the national team was announced by the Secretary General of the Swedish SBBF Fredrik Joulamo, who spoke to the player on Wednesday about his engagement in CSKA.
“He emphasized (Joulamo) that this was in direct conflict with the values of Swedish basketball and our clear position on Russia. Unfortunately, after this interview, we were forced to state that it is not possible for Jonas Jerebko to play for the Swedish national basketball team, “the federation said in a press release.
The 35-year-old basketball player also lost a sponsor shortly afterwards. The Swedish beverage company Nocco, of which he was ambassador, ended his cooperation with him.
“When he chose to work in Russia, we decided to end our cooperation with him,” Catharina Carlsdotter, the company’s marketing manager, told SVT television.
Jerebk’s work in the field of sports is also discussed in Sweden. He owns the Renegades organization, which operates in ESL. At the same time, she decided to exclude teams with contacts with Russia.
