The NBA’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine goes beyond symbolic protests and claims by some players and franchises. According to journalist Mark J. Burns of Sports Business Journal, the organization has decided to suspend its business in the invading country, which includes canceling activities related to distribution of digital and broadcast content.
With this decision, it is also understood that the NBA will stop broadcasting its matches in the country. According to Burns, there is no deadline for the NBA to decide to lift this suspension. It is not expected to be a measure that has many financial consequences for the best league in the world, as there is currently no no Russian player.
Yes, there are, instead, two Ukrainians: Alex Lenof the Sacramento Kings, and Sviatoslav Mykhailiukof the Toronto Raptors. Both have made a joint statement against the war:
“A great tragedy befell our beloved homeland, Ukraine. We categorically condemn the war. Ukraine is a peaceful and sovereign state inhabited by people who want to decide their own destiny. We pray for our families, friends, relatives and all the people who are in the territory of Ukraine. We hope that this terrible war will end as soon as possible. Dear fellow Ukrainians, resist! Our strength is in unity! We are with you!”
