NFL: Browns hope to find solution soon in Baker Mayfield case

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is still on the Cleveland Browns roster Monday morning, 10 days after Deshaun Watson was acquired by trade. The Browns nevertheless have every intention of severing their association with Mayfield, head coach Kevin Stefanski said during a press briefing.

“I think everyone understands the situation, and we hope it will be resolved soon,” Stefanski said.

Mayfield has been the team’s starting quarterback since his rookie season in 2018, but the Browns made significant changes to the position by acquiring Watson and signing free agent Jacoby Brissett to or his auxiliary. Mayfield’s $18.858 million salary for 2022 is guaranteed, making it harder for the Browns to trade him.

“It’s a unique situation,” Stefanski said. “We’ll see how it goes. I think all of us would like to have an answer yesterday, but that’s not the reality. »

The Browns’ voluntary offseason practice program begins April 19 in Berea, Ohio. Stefanski said he expects Watson and Brissett to attend. He also acknowledged the possibility that Brissett would have to be the starting quarterback for part of the season if Watson is suspended by the NFL after an investigation into allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct made by 22 women.
