MLS: It’s not just Beckham who invests: these NBA stars own MLS clubs – FOOTBALL INTERNATIONAL

Football as an investment!

Some basketball stars have invested their hard “thrown” money in the round leather. SPORT BILD takes a look at the owners of the American soccer league MLS.

▶︎ „Magic“ Johnson (62): The Lakers icon holds shares in Los Angeles FC, which is coached by ex-96 star Steven Cherundolo (43). Hollywood star Will Ferrell (54/”Anchorman”) is one of the club’s other investors. The playoffs were missed last season.

▶︎ Steve Nash (48): The Canadian has of course invested in the Vancouver Whitecaps. There, the Brooklyn Nets coach is one of four main investors. Former Bundesliga star Florian Jungwirth (33/SV Darmstadt 98) plays there in defense.

▶ ︎ Kevin Durant (33): Does his coach like that? The Brooklyn Nets forward owns five percent in the Philadelphia Union, making it a competitor to Nash and his whitecaps. Apparently, he is less concerned with “profit maximization”. When the deal was completed in 2020, it said: “They want to increase the Union’s footprint in the world of sports” and to intensify public relations and social work with the help of the basketball superstar’s foundation.

▶︎ Dwyane Wade (40): The former Miami Heat shooting guard apparently left his sports heart in Utah. After previously acquiring shares in NBA club Utah Jazz, he also invested in Real Salt Lake in January 2022. One of his stars: ex-HSV striker Bobby Wood (29).

▶︎ James Harden (32): With the Houston Rockets, “The Beard” once became one of the superstars of the NBA. He is now the star of the “76ers”. But while still with the Rockets, he joined the Houston Dynamo. The investment may not have given him much pleasure last season, because the team finished last in the Western Conference.

Harden isn’t the only high-profile sports star on Dynamo’s investing team, however. Boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya (49) is also there. Quarterback Russell Wilson (33/Seattle Seahawks), on the other hand, has bought into the MLS club Seattle Sounders.

Probably the most spectacular investment of the MLS is still Inter Miami. This is where the team with the highest market value plays, with Gonzalo Higuain (34), the biggest star in the league, with Phil Neville (45), the best-known coach, and with David Beckham (46), a real football giant.

Now it just has to be sporty. In the first two years in the MLS, the team missed the playoffs.
