Medvedev exhibition match canceled in Mexico

MEXICO CITY

The exhibition match that Russian tennis players Daniil Medvedev, number one in the world, and Andrey Rublev, seventh, were scheduled for March 21 in Mexico City and were postponed until 2023reported the organizers of the event called Tennis Showdown Mexico.

Due to all the current circumstances in the world, and in attention to all the parties involved, the organization of the Tennis Showdown Mexico, together with the players, have decided that it is not the time to carry out this exhibition game,” it was reported in a statement this Sunday.

According to the organizers’ statement, “Both Medvedev and Rublev have committed to play this match next Monday, March 20, 2023 and they are excited to come to Mexico City.”

This is the second postponement applied to this exhibition match that Daniil Medvedev was originally going to play on September 16, 2021 against Austrian Dominic Thiem, who canceled his participation due to a wrist injury.

Last November it was announced that Rublev would replace Thiem in this demo with Medvedev at the Mexico City Arena.

At the moment, Medvedev and Rublev are participating in the Indian Wells Masters 1000 as independent athletes due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Last Sunday on the central avenue Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, a group of people, including Ukrainian citizens, held a protest to demand an end to the Russian invasion of their country.
