The meeting between Nigeria and Ghana on Tuesday night was one of the hot spots in the World Cup play-offs. Both teams struggled to leave the stadium after the game, which ended 1-1 to qualify Ghana. Much violence took place. The Nigerian supporters, furious at the elimination of their team, overstepped the bounds, invading the pitch, destroying the substitutes’ bench and throwing smoke bombs on the Abuja pitch.
These impressive and shocking scenes forced the police to intervene with tear gas. In these circumstances, an official also died, the Zambian CAF doctor, Joseph Kabungo. However, the exact causes of his death are not yet known.
Full of emotion the Zambia Football Federation reacted via a tweet this Wednesday morning: “The Zambian Federation mourns the late Joseph Kabungo, on duty for the Nigeria-Ghana meeting. We take note that it is too early to dwell on the details that caused his death and we will await the full report from Fifa and CAF on the facts. He was a dedicated and valued member of our football, but also a valued friend and confidant to the players.
Dr. Kabungo was part of the staff of Zambia who won the African Cup of Nations in 2012 against Côte d’Ivoire.
