“I still have this fire in me”

Still motivated: Stan Wawrinka would like to have more than six months on the tour.

Before his comeback after a long injury break, Stan Wawrinka does not see himself at the end of his career as a professional tennis player. The 37-year-old from Vaud is making long-term plans again.

Just to come back and say goodbye at the same time, he doesn’t prepare himself, emphasized the three-time Grand Slam winner in an interview with the French sports newspaper “L’Equipe”. “I’m coming back to finish my career, but that doesn’t necessarily mean within six months. I still have that fire inside me that makes me love tennis, play it, love it, love the practice, love the toughness.”

After an absence of more than a year, Wawrinka is not aiming for his comeback without ambitions: “Since my knee injury almost five years ago, it has been my dream to win another ATP tournament before I quit.” The 2024 Olympic Games on the Roland-Garros sand could be another motivation, Wawrinka said.

Wawrinka plans to return to the ATP Tour no later than the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo in mid-April. The Lausanne native played his last match before the two foot operations, which put him out of action longer than planned, in early March 2021. He won his 16th and last title in May 2017 at the Geneva Open.
