‘I have the feeling that Grim can still hit the group, at least me’

Willem II must realize that it will be very difficult in the fight against relegation in the Eredivisie. Freek Heerkens has announced this after the scoreless draw against sc Heerenveen on Saturday evening.

“What should we do with this match? Well, good question… We took a point and kept zero again, but this is not getting along”, Heerkens says to the Brabants Dagblad† “We had to take three points, because we want to get away from the bottom as quickly as possible. So in the end we don’t have much to one point.”

The experienced defender saw Willem II ‘dominate heavily’ in the first half. “In terms of field play, we have shown improvement, we have to stick to that. That indeed offers no guarantees. But what do you think I should say about that? Look: bad is bad, good is good. But small successes – that we have kept zero for a long time, for example – should be cherished. No matter how harsh that may sound.”

Heerkens still believes in a good outcome for Willem II, which still has three points more than number sixteen Fortuna Sittard. “I will continue to put my shoulders under it as long as possible. We should not talk ourselves into the pit and pretend we are standing stiff at the bottom with a street length behind the rest. But we have to realize that it will be very difficult.”

The position of coach Fred Grim is under heavy pressure, but Heerkens does not want to talk about the future of the trainer. “I have the feeling that he can still touch the group. At least I can. We as a group of players, and I as a sportsman, must first look in the mirror ourselves. Not at others.”
