Florian Wirtz: Leverkusen’s super talent in derby against Cologne carried off with suspected serious injury

Wirtz immediately put his arms in front of his face and lay motionless on the floor. It was immediately clear that the derby between Bayer Leverkusen and 1. FC Köln was over for the young international.

A rule-compliant bump from Cologne’s Luca Kilian in a normal duel was enough to throw Wirtz out of step and cause disaster. Managers immediately rushed onto the pitch and tended to the player, who was crouched down and covered his face with his arms.

To the applause of the spectators and players, the 18-year-old ex-Cologne player was carried off the field on a stretcher. Bayer coach Gerardo Seoane brought Amine Adli into play for the injured man.
