The reform of the women’s national championships should take place at the end of the 2022-2023 season. We detail it for you.

National championships feminine will experience a real revolution from the 2023-2024 season with the return of Division 3. The reform that the French Football Federation wants to set up “an intermediate level to better prepare clubs for the structure and requirements of the highest national level”.

The women’s D2 will therefore be reduced from two to one group, which was a request from many clubs in order to harmonize the level. In the two current groups, we indeed realize that the championship is split in two between clubs which play the climb and clubs which play the maintenance. A single group will thus offer a more homogeneous competition.

D1 reserves eligible to upgrade to D3

At the end of the 2022-2023 season, the last six of each group will therefore be transferred to Division 3 with 12 teams promoted from Regional 1. The transition would therefore take place over a single off-season. This new D3 championship will be able to accommodate the reserves of D1 Arkema clubs in a position to climb within the framework of the “training course for young elite players”.

In this formula proposed by the FFF, the last two of D2 would be relegated to D3 while the first of each group of D3 would reach D2. The last three of each D3 group would be relegated to the regional championship, i.e. six teams. The modalities of the D3 accession phase are not yet defined for this reform of the women’s championships.

The current formula

  • D1 Arkema: 1 group of 12 teams
  • D2: 2 groups of 12 teams

The new formula proposed by the FFF

  • D1 Arkema: 1 group of 12
  • D2: 1 group of 12
  • D3: 2 groups of 12
