Robert Lewandowski’s contract situation at FC Bayern continues to cause discussions. Andreas Rettig cannot fully understand this.

Andreas Rettig, former DFL boss and currently managing director of third division club Viktoria Köln, has shown understanding for FC Bayern’s attitude in not having announced a contract extension in the Robert Lewandowski case. He justified this with the age and the contract period of the Pole.

“I don’t understand the excitement with a 1.5-year contract,” Rettig said Sport1-One pass. From an economic point of view, it is understandable “that they don’t jump over every stick. Knowing the general conditions, it’s part of the process that we start rethinking and don’t bring the money with the wheelbarrow at first wind.”

In addition, the times have changed when numerous international rivals could throw money around, emphasized Rettig and referred, among other things, to the situation at Chelsea, which is currently not allowed to make any transfers due to the situation surrounding the still owner Roman Abramovich. “I don’t see where this great purchasing power should come from.”

Lewandowski will be 35 at the end of the contract, “with what he wants to earn, it’s certainly a package. There won’t be that many people in line, even if he’s the world’s best striker,” Rettig continued, praising Lewandowski for his attitude the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

After initially taking a clear position (“We must not accept what is happening there and we have to support Ukraine”), he recently ended his sponsorship with the Chinese technology group Huawei, which according to media reports has helped Russia to use its network against to protect against cyber attacks. “Great class what he did there.”

FC Bayern: “Something seems to bother Robert”

Ex-Bayern professional Markus Babbel spoke of a “test” with regard to the FCB makers Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic. “These are not no-names, but important players. The timing is everything. I don’t have to start negotiations immediately, I can take the players aside for a coffee. The conditions are also difficult for FC Bayern right now. The club will always exist and the players will eventually leave.” Signs have already been set with the extensions of Kimmich, Goretzka and Coman.

Lewandowski, whose contract expires in 2023, caused a stir at the end of February when he made it clear that no one had spoken to him about extending the contract. “I’m hearing that for the first time,” he said after Bayern’s 1-0 win at Eintracht Frankfurt. Sports director Salihamidzic had previously raved about the striker and asserted that a sale in the summer was not up for debate. “He’s back on his way to propelling our team to titles, so that’s out of the question.”

Lewandowski’s ex-adviser Maik Barthel confirmed afterwards in the sports picturethat “Robert seems to be bothered by something at FC Bayern at the moment”. “Otherwise it’s not his way to express himself like that. My experience with him and his environment shows: A move to another top international club – preferably Real Madrid – was always the goal. I still think it’s possible!” The Pole himself said several times that he wanted to play for at least another five years if his body would cooperate.
