Ex-Liverpool star on contract poker: ‘Salah needs to understand he’s African’ – SOCCER

Talks between Mohamed Salah (29/contract until 2023) and Liverpool FC about an early contract extension have been going on for months. But an agreement has not yet been reached, and talks seem to be faltering.

In the midst of poker, El-Hadji Diouf (41) is now causing a stir! In an interview with “beIN SPORTS”, the ex-Liverpool professional claims: “Salah has to understand that he is African. He will never be paid what he would be if he were European.”

But how did Diouf come up with this thesis? He says: “The same thing happened to me when I was at Liverpool. I was told not to go abroad with my country to play with my national team.”

Diouf joined Liverpool from French club RC Lens in 2002 after a strong World Cup for Senegal for €15m. The striker was under contract with the Reds until 2005, but only scored six goals (13 assists) in 80 competitive games.

Despite everything, Diouf Salah advises staying with the team coached by Jürgen Klopp (54): “He is 29 years old and I ask him to play four more years with the Reds.”

And further: “It is obvious that Liverpool must accept Salah’s demands. If I were Salah I would stay at Liverpool, he can earn more money, he is the best player at the club together with Mané and together with him they will win a lot of trophies.”

Whether the negotiations between the Egyptian international (81 caps) and Liverpool will still have a successful end is completely open. Most recently, Salah has been repeatedly linked to a move to Real Madrid in the summer.

But Diouf can only warn against that, he says: “A move to Real Madrid would mean that he would have to start all over again.”

Salah moved to Anfield from AS Roma in the summer of 2017 for €42m. During this time, the Egyptian scored 153 goals in 239 competitive games and prepared 57 more. He also won the Champions League with the Reds in 2019. In the 2-0 triumph against Tottenham, Salah gave the Reds the lead with a hand penalty. In 2020 he secured the Premier League title.

Whether there will be more titles with Liverpool is still in the stars…
