Dominic Thiem will not start at Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami – focus on clay court season

Thiem has not played at the Mallorca Open 2021 since his injury. The 28-year-old, who has slipped to 50th in the world rankings, has an excellent record on clay and is considered one of the best clay court players on the ATP tour with Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The Austrian had first withdrawn from the tournaments in Australia and then from the events in Argentina, Brazil and Chile this year, but was still hoping for a return in Indian Wells. After all, Thiem was able to win the title there in 2019.

“I’ve had really good weeks of training. The wrist is fine, the hand is getting better and better, but I still decided to skip Indian Wells and Miami and start on the clay court,” said Thiem in a video on Instagram.
