BBL: Bayern Munich beats Bamberg

Cup winner Bayern Munich clearly beat former series champion Brose Bamberg in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) despite new corona cases and consolidated its lead in the table. After the 83:62 (34:35) success, the Bavarians are 36:10 points ahead of Telekom Baskets Bonn (32:14), who beat the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim 101:96 (51:52) on Saturday.

Paul Zipser scored his first points in his second assignment after a long forced break due to the consequences of a brain operation. The national player, who was only 15 seconds on the floor during his comeback against the Hamburg Towers last Wednesday, scored seven points in 13:35 minutes. Zipser hit all three shots from the field, the 28-year-old recorded three rebounds.

“With two players out it was logical for Paul to play more,” said assistant coach Demond Greene. The former Germany international stood in for the sick Bayern coach Andrea Trinchieri on the sidelines. “We were able to give Paul minutes when there was no pressure,” said Greene, referring to the high lead: “He just needs games like that.”

The Munich corona cases reported a few hours before the game. “Several members of the supervisory staff and players” are in quarantine, the message said. According to the club, those affected were “isolated from the group” at an early stage.

With 20 points, Deshaun Thomas was FC Bayern’s top scorer, who lost to Olympiakos Piraeus in the EuroLeague on Friday (88:98). At Bamberg, Justin Robinson scored 16 points.
