Zapopan Open. Renata Zarazúa leads invitations

Guadalajara /

The third edition of the Zapopan Open should again have the best Mexican tennis player. Renata Zarazúa will once again receive an invitation to the main draw to play the WTA tournament that has been gaining ground in Guadalajara for years.

The last time Zarazúa played a tournament on the WTA circuit was during April 2021 in Charleston. After recovering from an injury, Renata could find in the Zapopan Open the necessary motivation to face a new season.

The Mexican reached the quarterfinals in the first edition of the contest in 2019. On that occasion, she became the first national tennis player to reach that instance in a WTA tournament since Mariana Gavaldón did it more than a decade ago.

Katie Volynets will be another guest in the main draw. The 20-year-old American has already made it to the first rounds of Wimbledon and the USOpen in 2021 and 2019, respectively, so at the Zapopan Open she will seek to gain positions in the WTA ranking.

As for the preliminary phase, the tournament opted for Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva, Grand Slam champion in Juniors, where she also became number one in the world. The tennis player from Andorra, barely 16 years old, aims to become one of the greatest figures in world tennis in the future, and Guadalajara will give her the opportunity to take her first steps.

In addition to Victoria, another of the great promises like Brenda Fruhvirtova will also be in the preliminary phase of the Zapopan Open. The Czech, number four in the world in juniors, is also looking to enter professionalism and will arrive in Jalisco in search of a place in the main draw.

The third invitation for the previous phase will be for another Mexican. Fernanda Contreras, the 24-year-old national player and Vanderbilt graduate, will have the opportunity to face several experienced players for another spot in the main draw.

The Zapopan Open will take place from February 21 to 27 at the Pan American Tennis Complex within the same stadium that hosted the WTA Finals in November 2021. The organization is still looking to confirm the third guest to the main draw of the contest.
