“This must change”: Vincent Kompany makes a striking plea after new VAR farce | Jupiler Pro League

A new match, a new discussion around the VAR offside line. In Zulte Waregem – Anderlecht it took almost five minutes before the Purple & White opening goal was given the green light.

And even then it couldn’t be said with certainty, because perhaps there was a lack of a clear camera angle for the VAR to draw the line correctly.

Vincent Kompany – and the rest of those present – seemed annoyed during the long wait.

“Five minutes is just too long,” Kompany emphasized to Eleven Sports afterwards. “This is not a criticism of the referee, hey. But the system has to change in the interest of Belgian football and for the football product.”

“In the long run, the Essevee supporters really became part of the decision because they became impatient. And we also thought the same: let’s just play football.”

Earlier it also took several minutes in OH Leuven – Cercle Brugge before the third goal of the home team was definitively on the scoreboard.

And last week the offside line caused even more commotion when Standard’s winning goal was disallowed. In retrospect, however, the Referee Department had to admit that the line had been drawn incorrectly due to human error.
