The Riga Marathon will no longer register Russian and Belarusian runners

The Rimi Riga Marathon will no longer register Russian and Belarusian runners for the marathon, as well as freeze existing runner registrations from these countries.

According to representatives of the Rimi Riga Marathon on social media, the Riga Marathon has become one of the most popular international marathons in the region over the past years, bringing together runners from more than 80 countries, including Russia, where Riga was especially popular.

“While we understand that Russian runners are not to blame for the Kremlin’s demonic actions in Ukraine, we hope that our decision and message will do something to help Russia fight the mind-boggling aggression in Ukraine,” the marathon said.

LETA has already written that Russia launched an attack on Ukraine on Thursday morning. Despite the damage, the deaths and the approaching Russian troops to Kiev, it has not won significant victories.
