Spain – Football: a spectator killed and another seriously injured by the fall of a lighting tower

A spectator was killed on Sunday during an amateur football match in northern Spain by the fall of a light tower, caused by a strong gale, the guard was told civil.

The accident, which also resulted in a serious injury, took place on Sunday noon during a fourth division match in Pola de Lena, in the Asturias region. According to the first elements of the investigation, the wind would have knocked down an advertising tower, which would have knocked down in its fall the lighting tower, located at the edge of the stadium.

The victim, aged 68, died on the spot, despite the care provided by two players and then by the rescuers, said the Civil Guard. The injured was hospitalized but his life is not in danger. Photos relayed on social networks showed a gigantic metal panel lying on the roof of a building, with projectors and barriers projected on the ground.

The two victims “will always have the club at their side” and “at the side of their families”, said on Twitter the supporters’ club to which these two people belonged.
