Serena Williams: “I have been preparing for my retirement for 10 years”

Talking about Serena Williams is talking not only about the best tennis players, but about one of the best athletes in history. At 40 years old, the youngest of the Williams is just one Grand Slam away from tying Margaret Court’s record.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion gave an interview to Entertainment Tonight in which he spoke about his possible retirement from tennis and how he has prepared for it.

A possible withdrawal

«I am prepared for the day of my retirement, I have been prepared for that day for ten years. So, if you’ve seen King Richard (The Williams method in Spain) you know that my father always said that you had to prepare yourself, and I have done it for it. At the end of the day you think that it is always very important to have a plan and that is why I did it. I’ve always had a plan.”

On the other hand, Williams touched on other issues in her life, expressing her desire to be a mother again.

“I want to have more children, balance is key and I want to have that balance. I don’t know if I’m ready. Time is running out and I need to know when it can be and I hope it will be soon, when there is no pressure.

It was last year when Serena’s trainer, Patrick Mouratoglou, He spoke to People magazine, commenting on a possible retirement of the multi-champion.

“I don’t think Serena will retire until she wins a Grand Slam, because she’s come back to win Grand Slams. The day she retires, she will feel that she is ending 40 years of a life. It is something very difficult for people to measure. It’s a very emotional thing for her, and I understand that.”

Since winning her 23rd Australian Open crown in 2017, Serena has lost four times in her quest for another Grand Slam title. In 2018 she fell into Wimbledon and the US Open against Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osakarespectively, and in 2019 they fell in the same tournaments against Simona Halep and Bianca Andreescu.
