PGA: Callaway takes a break from its partnership with Phil Mickelson

The Callaway Golf brand announced it was ending its partnership with Phil Mickelson on Friday.

The break makes it the fourth sponsor to cut ties or temporarily halt its association with the golfer since his controversial remarks regarding the PGA Tour and league organizers in Saudi Arabia.

KPMG and Amstel Light announced earlier this week that it was abandoning its partnership with Mickelson. Workday did the same on Friday, and Callaway announced its decision afterwards.

“Callaway does not condone Phil Mickelson’s comments and we were really disappointed with his choice of words. At no time do they represent our values and what we are as a company,” reads a press release.

In 2017, Callaway and Mickelson extended their relationship for what was to be the end of his career.

In a post by author Alan Shipnuck, Mickelson described that he was willing to put aside the historic controversy of human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia to have some weight with the PGA Tour in the event of a new league.

Mickelson later apologized for his remarks, pointing out that they had been transmitted despite a request not to be broadcast according to him.
