Jacquel, of Texas at the Émile-Mayrisch Stadium

Just arrived, already adopted. Recruited this summer by Fola, the Frenchman Thibaut Jacquel did not take long to make people talk about him in the BGL Ligue. Author of two goals and an assist in his first match, the former striker from North Texas, in the United States, was decisive in the success of his team last Sunday in Ettbrück (3-2).

If the ground was at the limit of the passable due to heavy rainfall, the native of Saverne, in Alsace, has already been able to glimpse the advantages of playing in Europe. “In the United States, the championship was very physical. Here, the game is more tactical, the approach is more based on team play”, exults the 24-year-old striker.

“We were playing in an old baseball stadium”

Trained at FC Metz, the striker decided to cross the Atlantic in 2018 to join the University of Campbell, in North Carolina. After two first years of juggling between football and a degree in business and communication, Thibaut Jacquel was selected in 73rd position in the Draft by Dallas, an MLS formation, the highest North American level.

The Frenchman signs a professional contract there but plays with the reserve, North Texas, in the second division. “We were playing in an old baseball stadium with 40,000 seats. It happened to me to play in front of 5,000 or 6,000 people,” explains Jacquel, who has never appeared in MLS.

At 24, the French judged that it was time for him to write a new chapter on the side of Fola: “I had gone around my American experience”. In contact with several BGL Ligue clubs such as Youth or Mondorf, he opted for the defending champion with whom he hopes to discover the European Cup next summer.
