2021 is behind us. However, several Mexican athletes took the breed and showed that in this country there is talent in different disciplines despite the fact that the support is not even. From medals in the Olympic Games to triumphs in Formula 1 and podiums like that of Serio Pérez, going to the stellar victories of Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez who remains the best pound-for-pound boxer.

1. Canelo Alvarez
The boxer from Guadalajara has established himself as the king of boxing today and one of the best ‘pound for pound’ in the world. He won his three fights of the year with forcefulness (Yildirim, Saunders and Plant) and it does not seem that someone is going to beat him anytime soon. He successfully defended the WBA, The Ring, WBO and WBC super middleweight titles and won the IBF super middleweight.

2. Sergio Pérez
‘Checo’ finished his first season in the motorsport elite in fourth position in the drivers’ championship (190 points, his highest lifetime harvest). The man from Guadalajara added five podiums and one victory (Azerbaijan) and played a crucial role in defining the title, stopping Lewis Hamilton at the Abu Dhabi GP and helping his teammate Max Verstappen to be crowned.

3 Luis Alvarez
‘El Abuelo’ joined the dumbbell with Alejandra Valencia in the first medal won by the Mexican delegation in Tokyo 2020: bronze for teams in mixed archery.

4 Alejandra Valencia
Alejandra Valencia won the team bronze medal in mixed archery with Luis Álvarez at the Tokyo Olympics. In the individual event, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals. The medal won by the couple was the 70th in the history of the Mexican delegation.

5 Alexa Moreno
The Baja Californian had a great performance in Tokyo 2020: the best that a Mexican gymnast has had in any category in the Olympic Games. Moreno scratched the bronze medal by finishing fourth in the women’s horse jump in Tokyo.

6 Gabriela Agúndez and Alejandra Orozco
The pair of divers won the second Mexican medal in Tokyo 2020. They did it from the 10-meter platform in the women’s synchronized diving event. For Orozco it was his second medal, added to the silver that he had won when he was only 15 years old in London 2012. For the fourth consecutive time, the divers contributed medals for the tricolor delegation.

7 Aremi Fuentes
Chiapaneca by birth, Fuentes hung the third Mexican metal in Tokyo 2020: a bronze in weightlifting of 76 kg for women. It was the second medal that the country achieved in the discipline, after the gold of Soraya Jiménez in Sydney 2000. The conquest earned him the National Sports Award 2021.

8 Jaime Lozano
The coach of the ‘Tri Olímpico’ who won the bronze in Tokyo 2020. ‘Jimmy’ fulfilled his goal and led a group that returned Mexican football to the Olympic podium, as happened in London 2012, although now the color of the metal was bronze. The tricolor team was below Brazil and Spain, winners of gold and silver, respectively.

9 Edson Alvarez
Possibly the most outstanding and consistent Mexican soccer player of the year. He was Eredivisie champion with Ajax, a club in which he is already an idol as well as an undisputed starter, and has become an immovable piece in the scheme of ‘Tata’ Martino in the National Team.

10. Abraham Ancer
The Texas-born golfer of Mexican nationality burst into force in 2021. He reached 11th place in the PGA rankings (currently 12th) and placed 8th in the PGA Championship, the highest position in history for a golfer. Mexican. In addition, he won the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
