Belinda Bencic wins her first game of the new season.
Bencic, number 23 in the world, prevailed in the first round of the WTA 500 tournament in Sydney against the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA 88) 6: 3, 6: 2. The 24-year-old from Eastern Switzerland acted extremely confidently with her own service and won 36 out of 46 points. In the first set she took the serve from her opponent to 3: 1, in the second set to 2: 1 and 4: 1. After 70 minutes she used the first match point. The two played against each other for the first time.
Bencic, who started the season a week later than planned due to a corona illness, will face French qualifier Oceane Dodin (WTA 96) in the round of 16. This defeated the Mexican Giuliana Olmos (WTA 685) 6: 4, 6: 1. The duel against Dodin is also a premiere for Bencic.
Teichmann loses angrily
In Adelaide, Teichmann (WTA 37) did not live up to its role as a favorite. The 24-year-old from Biel lost to American qualifier Lauren Davis (WTA 95) 6: 1, 6: 7 (3: 7), 4: 6 in the opening game. It was an annoying defeat. After the clear winning start set, the Swiss number 2 conceded a rebreak twice in the second round – to 4: 4 and 6: 6.
In the tie-break she then fell 0: 5 behind. In the third set, Teichmann lost her serve twice, the second time to 3: 4. After that she was no longer able to react. The first duel between the two players lasted 2:22 hours. Thus, Teichmann will tackle the Australian Open without a victory in the individual next.
