Record transfer from KV Mechelen is the hero of Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup | Africa Cup

Cape Verde had defeated Ethiopia on the first match day, while Burkina Faso lost to host country Cameroon. With a win, Cape Verde would already be certain of the 1/8th finals, but Burkina Faso did not let it come to that.

Cape Verde did have a slight predominance, most opportunities were for Burkina Faso. With halftime in sight, former KV Mechelen striker Hassane Bandé – sold to Ajax for a record amount in 2018 – opened the game.

Bandé, now loaned by Ajax to a Croatian club, scored a pass from Issa Kabore – also ex-KV Mechelen – in the goal.

Bandé’s goal turned out to be decisive, because no more goals were scored after the break. It is already the 10th 1-0 result in this edition of the Africa Cup. Earlier in the evening, goals were scored quickly in the same group: host country Cameroon beat Ethiopia 4-1.
