Ranomi Kromowidjojo, one of the most successful swimmers in the Netherlands, ends her impressive career as a swimmer with immediate effect. The 31-year-old sports star made this known this morning.

“After 16 years of top sport my professional swimming career is complete. As a baby of 3 months old grandma took me to the bath and by 4 years I had my swimming diplomas. Swimming will always be my passion, but not on a professional level anymore. I have always known that there is more than top sport, and that it is part of a bigger picture,” she said this morning.

Her honors list includes a total of 17 world and 24 European titles. She became world champion three times in the Olympic 50-meter pool. At European level, she took six gold medals in the long track. She will now focus on a social career.

The sportswoman was in Suriname at the end of 2017 (photo), the country of birth of her Javanese father, and spoke there with the Surinamese magazine Parbode about swimming in Suriname. She then said that she definitely sees Suriname getting Olympic medals again, just like in 1998 and 1992. “But swimming is a matter of training and a lot of patience,” said the sportswoman in the magazine.
