Police: Incident at MSV Duisburg – VfL Osnabrück was not racism

DThe police investigation after the game between MSV Duisburg and VfL Osnabrück was abandoned has been completed. And according to the police, the results do not confirm that at the home game of the two third division teams on December 19, the accused spectator made a racist statement to the dark-skinned Osnabrück player Aaron Opoku. A spokesman for the Duisburg police told the “WAZ”.

The first game of the second half of the season was interrupted by referee Nicolas Winter in the 33rd minute when the score was 0-0 shortly before Christmas due to the suspected racist incident.

The public prosecutor must decide whether to proceed

After that, VfL Osnabrück was unable to continue the game. It was the first time that a game in German professional football was canceled because of an alleged racist statement.

The DFB has decided to repeat the match on February 2nd at 7pm in the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg. The investigative authorities have now handed over the file to the public prosecutor. This was announced by the police press office on Wednesday. The public prosecutor’s office will decide how to proceed in the case.
