Overmars argues for new rules: “Something like this should not blow over”

January 26, 2022 – Marc Overmars has spoken out about the decreasing amount of playing time for Dutch players in the Eredivisie. This season, foreigners get more playing time than the Dutch. Overmars stated that it would be a good idea to apply new regulations.

In conversation with Voetbal International, Ajax’s director of football affairs took the situation in England as an example. “It had been going on for many years that clubs had almost no English players left. That is changing, but that is happening slowly. The result was that the English national team has been struggling to be successful all this time. Talents were given almost no opportunities, so they can’t develop themselves or only very late.”

He pointed to Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane as examples of this and stated that such a situation should be prevented in the Netherlands. “Something like this should not blow over to us. Actually, there should be a rule in which a quota is set. Then you force the Dutch market to give it a chance. That would be good for Dutch football. Players should be given opportunities in their own country. ”
