Andy Murray (113, WC)Andy Murray (ATP-113) has given the Australian public something to feast on. The Briton is still working his way up the rankings and set the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (ATP-23) aside in round 1 after four hours of tennis. It is Murray’s first win there since the 2017 edition.
Murray has been in the final in Melbourne five times, but the Brit has had a particularly difficult time in recent years. Due to persistent injuries, he has been out three times since 2017 and in 2019 he lost his first match. He then also announced that he was thinking of quitting.
But after a new hip operation, he now seems to be completely back. In his first lap he was on the track for 4 hours.
“It’s fantastic to be back here in the second round,” Murray said afterwards.
The two-time Olympic champion and three-time Grand Slam winner will face Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel (ATP-120) in the second round.
