Luuk de Jong gives young Barcelona “historic” win at Mallorca | LaLiga Santander 2021/2022

Barca coach Xavi thought it was ridiculous that the match was not postponed. Due to positive corona tests, injuries and suspensions, he missed no less than 18 players. There were also a lot of corona absentees at Mallorca, Xavi thought the rules in Spain were “very strict”.

Xavi knew he had to do it with young boys. He selected no fewer than 9 players from the youth academy, of whom he dropped Akhomach and Jutgla in the base. Alvaro Sanz and Estanis came in and made their A debut.

Yet it was “anciens” who made the difference. Luuk de Jong (31), still referred to as a winter leaver by the Catalan press, showed that Xavi might still be able to count on him.

In 1 minute he hit the frame twice: first with a fumble ball against the post, then with a bicycle kick on the crossbar. Shortly before half time it was the third time, good time for the Dutchman. De Jong headed in a cross from Mingueza. It was his first goal in 3 months, his second since moving from Sevilla in the summer.

The home team had to come and Xavi’s emergency team dominated, but in the end had to fall back. In extra time, the coach was allowed to thank his goalkeeper. The 29-year-old Marc-André ter Stegen stood out with a great parade with his right hand, Costa saw his effort from close by.

Barcelona thus ends up in 5th place, the first to entitle the holder to a European ticket. And that is the first time since Xavi took over from Ronald Koeman in November. Barca are close to 1 point from Atletico and 2 from Real Betis.

Given the circumstances, Xavi could be more than satisfied: “Our first goal this season is to qualify for the Champions League, we are now 1 point away from that.”

“This victory strengthens us in our ideas and our project. It is historic and very precious. The young boys showed themselves and Ter Stegen made a phenomenal save. I am very excited that we were able to win.”

“Marc and Luuk saved us. I’m very happy for them. The team really convinced me. Luuk is an incredible professional. He doesn’t play much, but the way he trains and sacrifices himself is an example for the dressing room.”
