Likened to a Failed Coach in the Indonesian National Team, STY Offended

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

PSSI Exco Member Haruna Soemitro say coach Indonesian National team Shin Tae Yong offended in the evaluation meeting after the 2021 AFF Cup in Singapore.

In the 2021 AFF Cup, the Indonesian national team with the majority of young players became runners-up after losing 2-6 on aggregate to Thailand in two final matches.

The result was the sixth runner-up for the Red and White Team in the AFF Cup. This achievement puts Shin Tae Yong on the same level as other coaches who failed to lead the Garuda Squad to win the AFF Cup.

According to Haruna, it was this perception that made Shin Tae Yong unhappy with Exco PSSI’s response in the evaluation meeting.

“It can be said that it’s offensive, Indonesia is just a runner-up, it’s normal,” Haruna said to CNNIndonesia.com, Sunday (16/1).

“‘Before you that [Indonesia] has been runner-up five times’. Yes, the presence or absence of Shin Tae Yong is our highest achievement, we are runners up,” Haruna added.

According to Haruna, the achievement in the 2021 AFF Cup is different from the expectations of the Indonesian public for Shin Tae Yong who is expected to win the title.

Haruna compared it to when Shin Tae Yong would replace Luis Milla. At that time, Indonesian fans were busy urging PSSI to keep the Spanish coach because it was considered to be able to provide achievements for the Indonesian national team.

“If the achievement is only runner up, what’s the difference with yesterday? [pelatih sebelumnya]. Especially yesterday someone said, what’s the difference between him and Simon [McMenemy]. Simon is also the maximum runner up. That’s probably what offended him,” said Haruna.
