Legendary matches (10/10), Bruges-Standard 4-4: “When we got back to the locker room, we were all … angry!”


In December 2006, Standard returned from hell to Bruges by snatching the division in extremis via Ali Lukunku (4-4) after being led 3-0 and 4-1.

That afternoon, the visitors’ block at Jan Breydel Stadion was packed at kick-off. But as time went on, it gradually emptied before, at the very end of the meeting, to fill up again and to leap and sing like one man.

This December 10, 2006, well before Barça against PSG, declined, Belgian, the word remountada. Led 3-0 before the hour mark, then 4-1 in the 64th, Michel Preud’homme’s men achieve the impossible in a dumbfounded Bruges cauldron: return to 4-4 at the very end of the match.

A disastrous start to the match

In a heated stadium, Standard trembles despite its players of character such as its captain Sergio Conceição, his American rock Gucci Onyewu or his twirling striker, Milan Jovanovic. The entire Liège house faltered in the 4th minute and this first goal from Bosko Balaban who doubled the lead nine minutes later.
