kata ha jime. Hand choke to lapel and shoulder control. It is part of the twelve Shime waza techniques recognized by the Kodokan and the International Judo Federation (IJF). Incorporated into Judo by its creator, Jigoro Kano. This technique is also used in Jiu Jitsu. Its objective is to use the flap of the Judogi to exert pressure on the carotids and windpipe forcing the opponent to surrender and lose the fight.
Execution of the technique
This technique is generally applied during combat on the ground or Ne waza, although it can be performed standing up. It is executed from the side or from behind. Tori with his left hand grabs the right lapel of Uke’s judogi from the front and then passes his right hand under Uke’s armpit bringing it behind Uke’s head, with the palm facing inwards, the pressure that is strangling is due to to the combined action of the wrist of the left hand on Uke’s throat and the pressure of the right forearm on the back of his neck.
Specificities of the technique
The kata ha jime is a technique that admits different variations, it was conceived as a variant or evolution of Okuri eri jime. The effect of the strangulation is usually stronger than in the okuri eri jime, due to the fact that the possibility of defense with one arm is canceled and the push of the head with the back of the hand. Kata ha means “a wing” and refers to the shape of the Uke with an arm raised as if it were a wing. The common form is executed from behind as in Katame no Kata, this same form admits different variants such as applying it rolling from the Uke in the bench position, mounted or from the side whose best known form is the so-called jigoku-jime, or well, countering the Uke who tries an Ippon seoi nage. In all variants, especially those with rotation, the location and contact of the wrist in the area of the carotid artery is very important, so that, at the end of the rotation, strangulation is defined, with the Uke without any possibility defense and in some cases with loss of consciousness.
