Is it true that David da Silva is offside?

Jakarta

The referee for the Borneo FC vs Persib Bandung match in the 2021 BRI Liga 1 continued into the spotlight. Maung Bandung’s counter-attack failed because David da Silva was considered offside.

The match at the Captain I Wayan Dipta Stadium, Gianyar, Bali, Tuesday (18/1/2022), was won by Persib with a score of 1-0. Mohammad Rashid’s goal in the 63rd minute brought Persib to three points.

Apart from that, Persib actually had a great opportunity to double its lead to 2-0 in the 75th minute. Through a counter-attack, David da Silva got a breakthrough ball from Bruno Cantanhede.

Bruno passed the ball after receiving a sweep from Nick Kuipers which blocked Borneo’s attack. The ball sent by Bruno entered the Borneo area which was empty, left by the players because they played with too high a defense line.

Unfortunately the assistant referee raised the flag which then made the referee make an offside decision for David da Silva. The problem is, David da Silva was in the half of the Persib playing area.

Referring to the Laws of the Games of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the assistant referee had made a fatal mistake by advising David da Silva in an offside decision.

Even worse, the assistant referee was standing parallel to the center line of the field which should have made him make more informed decisions.

“An offside player if: part of the head, body, or feet is in the opponent’s playing area (except the midfield) and/or parts of the legs, body, or feet are closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball and the opponent,” Article 11.1 Laws of the Game IFAB.

In the replay it was clear that David da Silva was still in the half-field area of the Persib game area when Bruno sent a through ball. The referee’s decision also received a strong reaction from Persib coach Robert Rene Alberts who vented his emotions on the sidelines.

The referee’s decision also received attention from Persib supporters on social media. The Liga 1 hashtag was trending on Twitter because it was disappointed with the series of controversies at the highest level of football competition in Indonesia.

The match commentator was also hit by the sap. Two people who guided the match were also criticized by netizens for agreeing with the referee’s decision by calling David da Silva offside.
