Guinea painfully dominates Malawi

The hierarchy was respected. For its entry into CAN-2022, Guinea won against the modest team of Malawi (1-0). But the National Sily had to fight to dominate uninhibited opponents.

Guinea started CAN-2022 with a victory (1-0), Monday, January 10, against Malawi. A favorite of this meeting, the National Sily encountered stiff resistance from the Flames.

The Malawians start the game much better than their opponents. Impactful and without complexes, they embarrass the Guineans. In the 16th minute, they offered themselves the first most frank opportunity: on a bad Guinean recovery, Yamikani Chester rushed to goal, but arms his shot too quickly. His shot is easily picked up by Aly Keita.

Against all odds, Malawi dominated the game. It was not until the 23rd minute that Guinea finally got closer to the goal. Ibrahima Conté took a corner with a header, but his ball found the Malawian goal post. As the minutes go, the Guineans are more incisive. They are finally rewarded in the 35th minute. On a cross from José Kanté, Toulouse player Issiaga Sylla opened the scoring by shooting at close range (1-0).

Status quo in the second period

Despite this first goal, the Malawians did not give up and gave themselves an opportunity to equalize before the break. Peter Banda is close to equalizing (43rd) with a curled shot removed from a beautiful parry by Aly Keita. Three minutes later, it is Guinea who misses the opportunity to make the break. At the far post, Aguibou Camara took over a cross from Issiaga Sylla, but his shot was blocked twice by the Malawi goalkeeper.

At the start of the second half, the Malawians still show a lot of enthusiasm. In the 58th minute, Peter Banda found Yamikani Chester on the right, but the Guinean goalkeeper cut the action. Ten minutes later, Khuda Muyaba is close to the equalizer. Alone in the area, he shoots Aly Keita.

Little by little, the meeting sinks into a false rhythm. Both teams blame the blow. The score remains there. Thanks to this victory, Guinea joins Senegal at the top of Group B.
