Football: Wimmer plays in Foda’s focus

Wimmer inspired Arminia’s 2-0 victory with a goal and an assist worth seeing. The right winger crossed in the 27th minute with his right foot behind his left leg, compatriot Alessandro Schöpf only had to hold out his chest to make it 2-0. For the “Rabona trick” Wimmer received special praise from his trainer Frank Kramer. “He has things like that in his blood, the guy,” said the Bielefeld coach.

In the ÖFB team, club colleagues Alessandro Schöpf, Louis Schaub or, as a “joker” Karim Onisiwo, played on the right flank in the final qualifying games of the group phase. Another contender would be Valentino Lazaro. The 25-year-old acts mostly as a substitute at Benfica Lisbon. Wimmer is currently a U21 international and has been on the call list for Foda several times. A promotion to the A squad would be quite possible. “I would be absolutely ready to help the team,” Wimmer explained in the “Kronen Zeitung”.

“He’s got something crazy”

Not even three years ago, Wimmer was still playing in the Lower Austrian state league (4th division) at SV Gaflenz. After two years at Wiener Austria, he went to Bielefeld last August for a fee of 700,000 euros. There he quickly gained a foothold as a right winger. The league has three goals and five assists.

Wimmer is tied to Bielefeld until 2025. Austria would be involved in a resale. In East Westphalia they appreciate his carefree nature. Wimmer showed in Frankfurt what you’ve seen all season, said Bielefeld goalie Stefan Ortega. “That he sometimes inspires you, but sometimes makes you mad again. It’s that youthful madness. There’s something crazy about him, something carefree that’s really good for us.”

“Still working on a few basics”

The offensive player could also improve significantly, Ortega emphasized. “If he stays with himself, if he works on a few basics that are important for the team, then he can become even more valuable than he already is.” Coach Kramer saw Wimmer’s task fulfilled: “Patrick is a player who is good for a goal or for a goal action. That’s what he’s on the field for, that’s what the others behind him clear up.”

The ÖFB legionnaire would not have received any reprimands for the “Rabona” campaign either if it had gone wrong, his coach assured. “You have to allow him such things.” With a wink, Kramer added: “Before he takes his left, it’s better that way.” Wimmer himself justified the action by saying that he didn’t have enough trust in his left foot. Then he just tried it. “Fortunately, that’s how it worked out. Because if that doesn’t work out, I’ll probably be accused of arrogance or something.”

But in the end there was great rejoicing. With the fifth game in a row without a defeat, Arminia gained some air in the relegation battle and improved to 14th place in the table with a two-point lead over the relegation place. “We’ve had a good phase lately, we’re in a good mood,” said Wimmer. “If we are compact and do the booths at the front, then hopefully it will continue like this.”
