SINGAPORE – The coach of the Indonesian National Team (Timnas), Shin Tae-yong, appreciated the appearance of the Garuda squad in the second leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final which ended Saturday (1/1/2022) night WIB. Even though he didn’t win and could only draw 2-2 in the second leg, Tae-yong still saw the Indonesian national team playing well and never gave up.

As is known, the Garuda Squad had to admit defeat on aggregate from the War Elephant Team – the nickname of the Thailand National Team – 2-6 in two legs. In the first leg, which was held on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, Shin Tae-yong’s team were silenced 0-4.

Chanathip Songkrasin’s two goals (2′ and 52′), as well as goals from Supachok Sarachat (67′), and Bordin Phala (83′) made the Garuda Squad defeated. In the second leg which was held on Saturday (1/1/2022), the Indonesian national team outperformed Thailand in the first round by kicking Ricky Kambuaya (7′).

Unfortunately, the Indonesian national team conceded two goals in the second half through Adisak Kraisorn (54′) and Sarach Yooyen (56′). The Indonesian national team responded with a beautiful goal from Egy Maulana Vikri (80′), but it was not enough to equalize the aggregate.

Reflecting on the results of the two matches, Shin said that the first leg did not go according to plan. However, in the second leg, the South Korean coach appreciated the performance of the players for successfully carrying out his strategy.

“After the first and second leg of the 2020 AFF Cup final, in the first leg we couldn’t play the game we wanted,” Shin said in a post-match press conference, Saturday (1/1/2022).

This result made the War Elephant Team successfully won the sixth AFF Cup title. Meanwhile, this result also makes the Indonesian national team have to settle for six times being in the runner-up position of the AFF Cup.
