Greek track ended the long game with a backhand in the net, on the Spaniard’s second game point. He had been moving with difficulty for some time. Early in the race, he underwent medical treatment on his left thigh. In the run-up to the tournament, Greek track was already dealing with a toe injury. ,,At the moment it is especially bad,” he said afterwards.

In the Kia Arena in Melbourne, Greek track managed to offer the former number 10 in the world, despite the physical complaints, a good match. He immediately broke the Spaniard in the opening game, but then immediately surrendered his own serve.

Carreño Busta won the first set and took a 3-1 lead in the second set. It seemed to turn out to be a one-sided duel, but Greek track fought back nicely. ‘Let’s go‘, it sounded after he had come back to 3-3, after which a nice fight ensued. Only at 5-5 in the second set did Greek track hit his first ace and in total he hit only three aces.

In the tiebreak of the second set, Carreño Busta hit a double foul on set point for the Dutchman, which helped Greece to tie the score. The set lasted 61 minutes.

Carreño Busta took a break twice in the third set, but in both cases, the break was immediately undone. He was too sloppy in the tiebreak. Greek track, however, showed mental toughness and went out to 3-0 in the fourth set. He let his opponent come back, but broke again at 4-3, before finishing the set with a love game.

more difficult

In the decisive set, the tough Carreño Busta was continuously in the lead and Greek track started to move more and more with difficulty. At 5-4 he served to stay in the game, but before the game he was already sitting on his bench with a worried look. Carreño Busta took advantage and put an end to the great run of Greek track.

The Dutchman thus swallowed his first defeat since September and saw his series of 29 matches end without a loss. Carreño Busta, a former top 10 player, reached the semifinals of a grand slam twice. He was a semifinalist at the US Open in 2017 and 2020. Greek track, who had won a convincing first-round victory over Italian Fabio Fognini, was directly admitted to a grand slam tournament for the first time.

“At the moment it’s especially bad. I am not disappointed with my tennis, but I am disappointed that I am completely in cramps from the first game of the third set,” said Greek poor, who was already dealing with a toe injury in the run-up to the tournament. ,,Then I couldn’t play the way I wanted to play. But despite that I played well in the third, fourth and at the beginning of the fifth set.”

I can’t expect anything else after the shitty prep I’ve had.

In the final phase of the fifth set, Greek track, who again played with medication, longed for the end and at 5-4 he handed in his service game. ,,I can’t expect anything else after the shit preparation I’ve had. I was hardly able to train and was on the track for a maximum of one and a half hours. And then I now played 4 hours and 10 minutes in 35 degrees, against a Spaniard who gave nothing away.”

Greek track was disappointed with his own performance. ,,I didn’t even hit 50 percent of my first serve for a long time. That doesn’t make sense at all, although it’s not that I’m John Isner. I had to do it too often from my second serve and then you can play against Carreño Busta – the number 20 in the world.”

It didn’t bother him that his strong streak came to an end. ,,I have little problem with that, but the way in which that happens, I find especially painful. You’re playing a grand slam and it had to be crazy if the series didn’t end here. I’ve known the ultimate luxury with how I’ve played and with so many wins. That only happens once in your career. This year I will play a lot less pots and lose a lot more,” said the world number 62.
