Copenhagen. Finland will not host the European Badminton Championships for teams in February.

The championships have thus been canceled due to increasing corona infection and uncertainty about the design of potential restrictions, writes TV 2 Sport with reference to Badminton Europe’s website.

– Finland has already safely and successfully hosted two European championships during the corona pandemic, but the European Championships for teams is a significantly larger event in terms of the number of participants, volunteers and leaders, writes Badminton Europe.

Finland also had to hold the individual European Championships, but due to the cancellation of the team European Championships, we must now look at how and where both championships can be held. Here, Denmark can come into the picture.

Bo Jensen, director of Badminton Denmark, tells TV 2 Sport that he has previously expressed interest to the European Federation in holding the individual European Championships if problems should arise in Finland.

Last year, Denmark hosted the Thomas and Uber Cup, which is the World Cup for teams.

Finland hosted the European Championships for mixed teams in February last year. On that occasion, the Finns jumped in at short notice as the original English hosts fled due to the economic challenges posed by the corona pandemic.

Denmark is the defending European champion for teams on both the men’s and women’s side. Both teams thus won at the European Championships in the French city of Liévin in 2020.
