Benfica goalkeeper opts for transfer-free departure: ‘Clubs from the Netherlands have already polled’

Mile Svilar wants to leave Benfica next summer. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been playing second fiddle with the Portuguese top club for years, while he was known as a great talent in the past. He enjoys interest from the Eredivisie, among other things.

Svilar made the switch from Anderlecht to Benfica in 2017 for two million euros, where he became the youngest goalkeeper ever in the Champions League. Since then, however, it has been quiet around the Belgian with Serbian roots. He must tolerate Odysseas Vlachodimos in the pecking order. “Mile loves life in Portugal and thinks Benfica is a wonderful club, but realizes it is time to go elsewhere for his chance,” father Ratko Svilar told sporza.

Svilar still has a contract until the end of the season and can therefore leave on a free transfer. The Eredivisie is one of the possible destinations. “He does not want to stay with Benfica. His sporting future is too uncertain here – there are not enough opportunities. Did we already receive offers? Nothing concrete yet, but clubs from Belgium and the Netherlands have already polled. We are calmly looking at all options and waiting for the right next step for Mile.”
